NEWC is committed to truth & reconciliation and acknowledges this land on which we gather as Treaty 1 territory, ancestral lands of the Anishinaabek, Nehiyaw, Anishininew, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, heartland of the Red River Métis and home to many Inuit People.

The seven First Nations that are represented by Treaty One Territory are: Peguis First Nation, Sagkeeng First Nation, Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation, Long Plain First Nation, Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation and Swan Lake First Nation, plus the Red River Metis Nation.

We gratefully acknowledge that Winnipeg's water is sourced from Treaty 3 Territory Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

We also acknowledge Treaty 1 as where Elder Myra Laramee put forth the term Two Spirit to refer to the Indigenous LGBTQ* community (3rd annual Intertribal Native American, First Nations, Gay and Lesbian American Conference in Winnipeg MB, 1990).
